Before we begin, it will be necessary to lay some ground work. Because we are attempting to read supernatural meaning into natural events, we need to be well aware of the scriptural justification for such inquiry, as well as the warnings and limitations that govern us.
And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. And let them be for signs and for seasons, and for days and years, and let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth.” And it was so.
Genesis 1:14-15
The Bible is not a textbook. It contains poetry, historical narratives, allegories, law, genealogies, songs, prophecies, parables, prayers, building plans, codes, metaphors, letters, conversations, symbols, inventory lists – virtually any literary device you could name. But regardless of the form it takes, the Bible speaks truth into our lives. Sometimes the truth is literal, sometimes not. But an honest reading of Genesis 1:14 indicates that one of the functions of the sun, moon, stars and planets is to serve as signs from God to mankind. I believe that.
One of the most poetic, majestic and moving passages in the Bible is Psalm 19. It reads, in part:
The heavens declare the glory of God,
and the sky above proclaims His handiwork.
Day to day pours out speech,
and night to night reveals knowledge.
There is no speech, nor are there words,
whose voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out through all the earth,
and Their words to the end of the world.
In them He has set a tent for the sun,
which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber,
and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy.
Its rising is from the end of the heavens,
and its circuit to the end of them,
and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
Psalm 19:1-6
I do not believe that every night sky or celestial event has something specific to say to us other than what it proclaims every moment of every day. But there are special times when creation declares more than just His glory. The primary example of this is the Star of Bethlehem. It is my belief that we have entered one of those times.
A WORD OF CAUTION
It is important to understand that there is a big difference between God giving us signs in the sky and what is known as divination. In Isaiah 47:13-14, God said [to Babylon], “You are wearied with your many counsels; let now the astrologers, those who prophesy by the stars, those who predict by the new moons, stand up and save you from what will come upon you. Behold, they have become like stubble, fire burns them; they cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame.”
Tarot cards, Ouija boards, horoscopes, idols, necromancy, spirit guides – anything we consult to divine the future (other than God Himself) is absolutely prohibited, futile and very dangerous. Engaging in such things opens doors to the enemy, and has resulted in much of the pain and anguish we see in our world today.
We are about to venture into deep waters. Because we are examining the possible spiritual implications behind these events (and because I realize that many people reading this do not have a strong biblical background), I will be quoting a fair number of Bible passages.
If you are truly interested in learning more about this subject, I would encourage you to read more from the Bible than what is quoted here. Context is important, as is an understanding of how God works in the affairs of man. You have much to gain.
So let's begin!
