LITTLE EGYPT
Departing Jonah, the eclipse headed towards an area of southern Illinois widely known as "Little Egypt," a moniker that goes all the way back to the early 19th century. In the Bible, Egypt is a place where God's people sometimes went for temporary provision or protection. Abraham moved to Egypt to escape a famine, as did Jacob's family two generations later. In the gospel of Matthew, we find that Jesus' step-father Joseph moved his family to Egypt in order to escape the clutches of Herod the Great. But God never intends His people to remain in Egypt. In every case, God calls them back home to the Promised Land. Christ's Church should also be ever prepared for the day when He calls us out of our spiritual Egypt to take us to the eternal home He has prepared for His children. Jesus told His disciples this at the Last Supper.
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will also keep yours."
John 15:18-20
"In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also."
John 14:2-3
Backing up a bit, just before the eclipse hit Little Egypt, it entered the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), an area 80 miles south-southwest of Carbondale. One hundred miles beyond Carbondale, the umbra will cross the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone (WVSZ).
In addition to the two seismic zones, the next map shows a red dot at the juncture of the 2017 and 2024 eclipse centerlines in the little town of Makanda, Illinois, just 6.5 miles southwest of Carbondale's city center.
THE NEW MADRID & WABASH VALLEY SEISMIC ZONES
Let’s stop for a moment to discuss these fault zones. The last significant activity involving the NMSZ occurred between December, 1811 and February, 1812. There were a series of quakes, four of which are thought to have registered in the vicinity of 7.0-7.5 on the Richter scale. It was reported that the shocks were so severe that the Mississippi River (which flows through the zone) appeared to flow backwards, church bells rang in Boston and tremors were felt in Washington, D.C., 700 miles away. Of the roughly 2,000 aftershocks occurring over the next few months, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that thirteen registered in the 6.0-6.5 range.
In a 2008 study, FEMA determined that if such an event were to occur today, it would be the greatest natural disaster ever to hit the US. Their published report quoted a USGS statement saying that the NMSZ is "the largest area in the world susceptible to soil liquefaction," and that "the earth’s crust in the Central and Eastern US transmits earthquake ground shaking farther and more efficiently than fault zones on the West Coast."
MORE SIGNS IN THE HEAVENS?
The 1811-12 earthquakes were preceded by the appearance of Tecumseh's Comet, an event which occurs once every 3,065 years. It was at its brightest during the quakes. (Tecumseh was a Shawnee leader whose name means "Shooting Star," or "He who walks across the sky.")
Two solar eclipses preceded these quakes: a total eclipse on June 16, 1806 and an annular on September 17, 1811. Each path crossed Fort Wayne, IN, site of the 1809 Indian Treaty of Fort Wayne; Tecumseh opposed this treaty and lost his life in battle in 1813.
For more interesting information on these quakes, check out the New Madrid website.
Though the Wabash Valley zone is not as well known as the NMSZ, it too is a matter of serious concern to seismologists. Both zones are active, and quakes with magnitudes in the 5-6.5 range have occurred numerous times since the New Madrid Series of the early 19th century.
We looked at the fifth seal in Revelation a moment ago, now let’s consider the sixth seal.
And when I saw the Lamb open the sixth seal, there was a great earthquake, and the sun became black like sackcloth of goat hair, and the whole moon turned blood red, and the stars of the sky fell to the earth like unripe figs dropping from a tree shaken by a great wind. The sky receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place.
Then the kings of the earth, the nobles, the commanders, the rich, the mighty, and every slave and free man hid in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. And they said to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb. For the great day of Their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?”
Revelation 6:12-17
So far we have seen that the Carbondale/Makanda area is located at the 2017 eclipse's Point of Greatest Duration; that it is the crossing point of the 2017 and 2024 eclipses; and that it is situated between the New Madrid and Wabash Valley Seismic Zones.
There's one more thing you may find interesting before we continue our trek northeast.
THE US CENTERS OF POPULATION
Late one night I was pondering these things and a thought popped into my head. Check the US Center of Population. So I hopped out of bed, fired up my laptop and started digging. It turns out that there are actually two different population centers! The Mean Center of Population is determined by placing all the persons in the America on a US-shaped plate to see where the plate would balance. That’s known as the center of mass. According to the 2020 Census, it is located in Montgomery Township, Missouri, about 170 miles west of Carbondale. The other center is known as the Median Center of Population, found at the intersection of the longitude that divides the US population in half and the latitude dividing the population in half. That location happens to be King, Indiana, about 100 miles to the northeast of Carbondale.
So we note that the crossing of the two total solar eclipses lies between two major seismic zones and the two US centers of population.
THE DAY OF THE LORD
If these three eclipses tell the story of last day events, then I would propose that the 2017/2024 crossing represents what the Bible refers to as The Day of the Lord. This is a day of terror, judgment, hopelessness and despair. Revelation 14:19 refers to it as "the great winepress of God's wrath." No one will escape.
Behold, the day of the Lord comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger, to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it. For the stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light; the sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not shed its light. I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.
Isaiah 13:9-11
WARNINGS (the Ninevehs)
It has been widely reported that this eclipse crossed seven Ninevehs in the United States and one in Canada. Once again, that statement is very misleading. Take a look at the next map, As you will note, the red dots (Indiana and Ohio) are within the PoT; the yellow dots (Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Virginia, New York and Nova Scotia) are not.
Indiana and Ohio I accept. The rest have no relevance to the discussion. Again, the entire United States witnessed a partial eclipse, so anything outside the PoT becomes virtually meaningless.
That being said, it is possible to assign a measure of significance based on the very fact that a particular location lies outside the umbral path. We've encountered two examples of that already: the fact that the US border lies just outside the 2021 Canadian-Siberian eclipse seems to indicate that God is intentionally drawing our attention away from that particular event (in the present discussion), and the fact that the 2023 eclipse just missed Salems in Oregon, Utah and New Mexico seems to suggest that we are no longer in the period of peace that the 2017 eclipse indicated.
By the way, Ninevah, Kentucky is spelled -ah, not -eh. Either way, had it been in the path, it would have made the cut.
